Writing Poetry
There are 6 steps to creative composition i.e. Plan, Draft, Review, Edit Checklist, Present, Publish.
Plan. Know what you want to write about. You don’t necessarily need a title, but you need an idea. Have a bank of words or phrases you may wish to draw on. Maybe use a diagram with ideas branching from a central theme. Realise that you probably might not get right first time. Decide who the poem is for; an individual or a specific group, or maybe just for yourself.
Draft. Get your ideas on paper in an appropriate style or format. Use your dictionary and thesaurus for words you’re not sure of: and for possible alternatives.
Review. Read it, talk about it, explore alternatives to words or lines you are not happy with, make alterations or changes.
Edit checklist. Have you done what you wanted to do? Have you presented it well? Have you chosen an appropriate title? Is the style right for the subject? Can you make it more interesting? Do you want to? Do the lines fit and make sense? Have you checked the punctuation? ( capital letters, full stops, commas, speech marks). Have you sought help from others- if necessary?
Presentation. Decide how you want to present your work. You may prefer a hand written piece. You may prefer a word-processed piece. You may wish to use illustrations.
